Algae and Hydrophytes as Potential Plants for Bioremediation of Heavy Metals from Industrial Wastewater

Aquatic bodies contaminated by heavy metals (HMs) are one of the leading issues due to rapidly growing industries. The remediation using algae and hydrophytes acts as an environmentally friendly cost effective. This study was performed investigate pollution load, especially HMs, in wastewater Gadoon Industrial Estate utilize (Typha latifolia (TL) Eicchornia crassipes (EI)) (Zygnema pectiantum (ZP) Spyrogyra species (SS)) bioremediators. obtained assessed for physiochemical parameters before treating with selected species. pot experiment 40 days. Then samples were from each analyze metal removal efficiency assess concentrations atomic absorption spectrophotometry. dissolved oxygen (DO; 114 mg/L), total suspended solids (TSS; 89.30 electrical conductivity (EC; 6.35 mS/cm), chemical demand (COD) (236 biological (BOD; 143 (TDS; 559.67 pH (6.85) analyzed. HMs noted Zn (5.73 mg/L) Cu (7.13 mg/L). then treated species, significant reductions detected physicochemical characteristics such DO (13.15–62.20%), TSS (9.18–67.99%), EC (74.01–91.18%), COD (25.84–73.30%), BOD (21.67–73.42%), TDS (14.02–95.93%). removed up 82.19% 85.13% wastewater. revealed that significantly decreased HM levels (p ≤ 0.05). found TL, EI, ZP, SS best hyper accumulative order > Zn. most efficient Typha Zygnema pectiantum. It concluded bioremediation is cost-effective technique can be used treatment terms removal.
